Martha HeppardÕs beautiful watercolor batiks on rice paper are inspired by ancient textile batiks of ancient Japan and Indonesia. Martha grew up in Hawaii, surrounded by Asian art, and learned to batik in junior high school. She applies wax in a resist technique to rice paper, and instead of using dyes, uses watercolor as her medium. She often places up to 16-20 layers of color in an area to achieve the deep rich colors that she is known for.
